Lots going on today at Washington Square Park. I gather there were some last minute details to finalize — watering the plaza down (to rid it of construction dust), mowing the lawn – by hand, testing the Fountain again … — before tearing down the fence that has long surrounded the Fountain Plaza and NorthWest Quadrant. Word is the date is now tomorrow, Tuesday, May 19th. Pictures of the scene today:

/ May 18, 2009all it means is a delayed countdown to see how long the furniture of the new Disney Washington Square will last– oh those Main Street Gay Nineties lamps around the fountain–but which decade of the Victorian era is it? The bird-topped faux gaslamps suggest 1850s–they’re precious in another way– and should give off a lovely fluorescent glow– and that delicate fencing. One bump of a baby carriage is all it’s going to take. I guess the new gentility is supposed to make parkgoers more genteel… hmmmm. I don’t really mind the general theme– could have been lovely if the furniture didn’t look as though it was ordered out of Sky Mall magazine.
